Changes to Due Dates and Important Information
As several of our units are now wrapping up, students will be completing a number of assignments during the coming weeks. Time management is key skill to learn. Students have had multiple weeks to complete these projects so it is expected that work will be handed in on time.
Scientific Inquiry Projects- Oct. 29

Fantabulous Products- Nov. 10***
Students must arrive to school on Monday Nov. 2nd with research about a worthy cause they wish to write about.
Equity and Empathy in the Global Village
Since the beginning of the term our class has focused on the development of social skills. Through the study of film, literature and music we have focused on the concept of empathy (putting yourself in someone elses shoes). We will be focusing heavily on both empathy and equity during the next week.

Hello! I am sorry for my absence the past few days but unfortunately the flu appears to have rendered me useless. I am looking forward to getting out of bed and moving around for longer than 45 minutes.

Scientific Inquiry Questions
For the culminating project in our "Human Organ Systems" unit, students will create a research report about a inquiry of their choice. For example, students could create a report about the effects of trans-fats have on your body, the impact of smoking on the cardio-vascular system, or what exactly "diabetes" is and how it effects the body. More information about the project will be sent home this week. At the moment, students need to find a topic they are interested in and want to research further.
Weekend Homework and Update
I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend as much as I am. Tomorrow morning it will be expected that all students will have the nutrition assignment completed as well as their formal journal entry. Students should also have an idea in mind for their product creation idea.
For anyone who lost the sheet I am including a picture of it in this post. The journal entry assignment is two pages (double spaced). It should contain both ideas and justifications about changes you would make to your school.
Congratulations to Hayley and Jessica for winning our classroom awards for the month. Both students demonstrated team-oriented attitudes during September and made our classroom environment more positive through their actions.

Class Newsletter
Newsletter
Hello Students, Parents and Family:
Welcome to Grade 5!
Once per month a newsletter will be coming home with students that will keep parents informed of upcoming events, units of study and school happenings.
Language and Literacy-
During the first term of study, students will be exploring a variety of texts from the fiction genre. Students are encouraged to extend their studies outside the classroom and develop an independent reading time at home. A short book report about a novel of the students choice will be due in November, so students need to find a book they enjoy during September.
Each student will be creating a writing portfolio over the course of the school year. Fiction is the first genre our creative writing club will be studying, so expect to hear some creative ideas coming home very soon.
Mathematics-
In September place value will be the main focus of our studies. Students will be extending their understanding of decimals to hundredths and investigating whole numbers up to six digits.
Science-
Human organ systems will be the first science unit of this year. Students will be exploring the human body and developing a critical understanding of the role each organ plays within the body.
Classroom Blog-
I encourage all students, parents and educational community members to visit the website: www.doyle23.blogspot.com This site will serve as our classroom blog. Newsletters, event info, announcements, curriculum related links and a variety of other posts will be regularly added to the site.
DPA and Physical Education-
Students will participate in daily physical activity , therefore they need to come to school dressed appropriately or have gym clothes readily accessible.
